a sporadic self-chronicle since 2001

I’m not a big fan of reality TV, but I’ve watched my fair share of it over the years. So when it comes to the shows looking for talent, I’ve always wondered what the deal was with the untalented people. Do they know that they’re terrible and just want to get on TV, or do they actually think they’re good? I mean, some of these people are terrible singers, why do they even try out? Did no one along the way have the heart to tell them they weren’t any good?

That being said, there’s this guy at work who has been saying he’s going to audition for Canadian Idol when it comes to town next month and he’s… not so good. He’s not terrible but he really lacks talent. He sings along to the radio regularly and it’s entertaining in that it’s funny. It’s really not something I would think he’d want others to hear.

But I worry. Is he really auditioning? Does he think he’s good? Should I be the one to recommend he rethink the audition? I didn’t want to discourage him so I asked him if he really meant to go (since a lot of the other employees seem convinced) and apparently I bring out the honesty because he told me that he was originally just kidding but some of the others were so into it, he just didn’t bother telling them he wasn’t serious.

I’ve gotta’ say, I felt kind of relieved. After years of wondering how the untalented people on this show got there, I didn’t want to have to be the one to tell someone not to go audition.
