a sporadic self-chronicle since 2001

I walked into my room after work today to find a toad on my windowsill.

I came down here to check on the status of my window and I did have a new one. Unfortunately, it was unfinished. They had taken out the old window and just screwed in the new frame without actually filling in and sealing the edges of it, leaving a 2cm gap between the window’s wooden frame and the wall. Apparently it was enough for the toad to squeeze in.

My goal was to get the toad back outside safely, but I was worried that trying to quickly catch it would scare the thing into jumping into my room and I’d never find it under my bed, amongst boxes etc. Instead of trying to quickly catch him under glass, I decided to approach him slowly with my palms flat towards him. That way, I could use my hands as a backboard to bounce him back onto the ledge if he tried to jump away. I also had a glass between my hands as I moved towards him.

But the guy didn’t move. Maybe it was all the talking to him, but he just stayed still as if he was okay with my relocation plans. So I managed to get my hands right up in front of him, then just placed the cup overtop of him, slid my hand underneath and brought him outside.

While out there, I asked one of the window guys if they were planning on finishing my window today. At first he was hesitant and then it seemed like re remembered that I’m the guy that’s been waiting since Tuesday and he said he’d try.

At ten to six, I went back out and the guy asked if it was all done. Apparently he sent one of his guys to finish it. When I told him no one had come by, he went to ask his underling and it turns out the underling heard the wrong unit number and finished my neighbours’ basement window instead. Yay!

But the main guy understood that my room’s been totally out of order for days now so he sent someone to do it just before they left for the day and now my room is finally back together, as it should be.

Patio was slow again today so I went over and helped out in school where I worked with a couple 16-year-old kids. They’re the youngest of the new students this summer. The oldest are 20. So damn young.

Talking with them was really hard. Everything was very scattered and brief: There was no real talking about any one thing. Instead they would briefly mention lots of stuff. For example, this one guy and I determined that we both watch a lot of movies. However, instead of talking about movies we liked, he just kept asking me if I’d seen this movie, or that movie. No talking about the movie, just establishing if I had seen it or not before he moved on to the next one. At most, he’d offer a brief, “yeah, I like that one” before he asked about the next one. It was pretty boring and was repeated with other topics such as TV shows and games.

Jeff, who I normally work with making tables in patio, was telling me that he showed up earlier than usual the other day and while he was having a pre-work smoke, he saw all the students’ mothers drive them into work and hand them their bagged lunches.

I wonder if their supervisor reads them a story before nap time.

poor jerome, always being pestered to update.

i’m tired at work today. happily i managed to offload something that may have been my concern, if they had been using current versions of circuit boards and firmware. but they weren’t, and i didn’t work on what they’re using, so i said i didn’t know how it worked and that was the end of it.
