a sporadic self-chronicle since 2001

I picked up Hotel Dusk: Room 215 for the DS recently. The game is an interesting cross between a detective novel with choose-you-own-adventure elements as well as a general Myst adventure/puzzle aspect. All of this done in sort of simplistic film noir visuals.

It had been all fun and games until I got stuck and remembered why I don’t play Myst-like adventure/puzzle games: I get stuck and frustrated because I don’t know where to use what to solve something to progress on in the story. Now that I find myself in a situation where I can’t seem to do anything it’s just damn annoying.

Might have to FAQ my way through this one - the story is just too interesting to give up on!

i’ve always had the same problem with those types of games. problem is there’s usually one part you’ll be stuck on, but trying to find that one part in the faq is impossible and so you end up spoliing a bunch of stuff even if you only meant to find out one specific thing to do next.

    Romer Says:

    best ways around that are:

    i. follow the FAQ regularly
ii. ask someone else to look for it in the guide and just tell you what you need to know, or a hint to help you
