Western Canada Road Trip, Day 3
Thunder Bay, ON to Winnipeg, MB - 727 km

This morning our shower didn’t work. A call down to the front desk had the woman telling me it was ‘tricky’ but that it did, indeed work. It didn’t. Eventually, she came to check it out herself, agreed it didn’t work and gave us a key to a second room to use that shower. A bit weird walking down the hall and going into another room just to shower, but oh well.

In addition, we lost a bit more time in the morning because I am an idiot. Laura got up to head out for a run and while she was at the car, grabbing her running shoes, I thought I’d be clever and pop the trunk to give her a start. Of course, I was still half asleep and didn’t think about the fact that we had our bikes mounted on the trunk. Oops.

So when the shower situation was finally sorted out and Laura was showering, I went outside and had to completely take the bikes and the rack off the trunk lid to actually get it closed, and then put everything back on. Ah… fun.

We followed (and then passed) this Greyhound bus hauling a trailer of stuff today. Laura and I mused that it was carrying our final shipment of stuff out to BC.

We finally got out of Ontario today and into Manitoba.

Weirdest thing seen today: The big clouds of bugs, seen above and below. Those little dark patches above the trees on the left? Bugs. Lots of them. I couldn’t manage to catch them on camera when they were closer but it was damn weird to see so many of them just hovering around.

Yeah, it’s flat here.

This morning before we left, we called around to make reservations for tonight. The first hotel we called just laughed at us, not really saying why, and told us ‘good luck finding a place for tonight.’ Soon enough we had booked something online for tonight on the far side of town, no big deal. As we drove in towards Winnipeg, listening to the local radio, we discovered the reason the first hotel laughed at us: Justin Timberlake is playing in town tonight. Super.

Now, the license plates in Manitoba sport the slogan, “Friendly Manitoba” but when we got to the hotel… not so much. I don’t know if he was just having a bad day or what, but the guy at the front desk of the hotel definitely hated his job and his life. He ranted for a bit about how we should never book online because they sometimes never even get the reservation, and he wasn’t sure he’d even have a room for us. Most negative, bored-of-his-job guy ever. Really, he reminded me of one of the guys from ‘Clerks,’ but less funny. In the end, they had our reservation and the room was ready and cleaned for us so it was no big deal but this guy seemed to think that we’d be stuck out on the street or something.

The room was nice enough and even boasted Nintendo-branded internet!

Ah yes, Laura spotted someone with a Kelowna, BC license plate in the parking lot here in Winnipeg. Random!

Interestingly, the shower heads and towels have all been the same in all three hotels so far, even though they have all been different hotels.

Also, Laura no longer believes in the existence of moose.

I do believe it’s true, that there are roads left in both of our shoes
