Western Canada Road Trip, Day 5
Moose Jaw, SK to Golden, BC - 947 km

Laura and I got off to an early start this morning as today was our longest drive of the trip, pushing straight through Alberta and Banff National Park.

Salt?

…Found in the mens room of the Alberta tourist station just inside the Alberta/Saskatchewan border.

Saw these in Calgary and didn’t know what the heck they were. Giant slides? It wasn’t until later that we realized that they are probably the remnants of the old winter Olympics ski jump stuff.

Banff was very pretty. More pictures via the link at the end.

This is the ‘Welcome to BC’ sign - I wasn’t quite on the ball in catching it.

Hours and hours of driving later, we arrived in Golden, BC.

Our hotel tonight is the cheapest for miles around. It’s sufficiently nice, too. The reason for the cheapness is that our room is mere steps from the Trans-Canada highway. Mind you, Laura and I will be too tired to notice, I’m sure.

Not feeling like more driving, we decided to walk somewhere for dinner. Google Maps showed that it wasn’t too far to a Subway so we figured we would find something delicious near there.

Turns out that Golden is not a pedestrian-friendly city. Well, at least not from where our hotel was. Just to get to the above sign, we had to walk along the Trans-Canada highway for 10+ minutes, down hill, either on the tiny shoulder or on the outside of it. So we played “mountain goat” and tried not to fall down the side of the mountain:

Yeah, that was exciting. I did manage to get a picture of the city from up there:
