a sporadic self-chronicle since 2001

Apparently Ontario’s having quite the winter storm right now. My brother in St. Catherine’s says he shoveled his driveway three times today to keep up with it. 50cm expected. Ouch. Here, it was warm and sunny. I biked my bike over to my place from where it was staying in my sister’s shed, across town. Nice ride.

In other news, Laura and I watched King of California tonight. Browsing the shelves of Rogers Video, it stood out to us as an interesting movie about a crazy person.

A fresh-out-of-the-mental institution father and his emancipated teenage daughter venture together on a quest for an ancient Spanish treasure buried beneath their local Costco…

It was an interesting movie. I found they built up the daughter to be strong, assertive and collected but when her crazy father shows up, she suddenly becomes a sidekick who gives only minor protests of “this doesn’t make sense.” Also her father is actually crazy. Like, fucking batshit nuts. Completely gone. It’s hard to believe anyone could actually be that crazy. And she’s pretty okay with it.

One final thing I had trouble with was the whole idea of metal-detecting for treasures. Okay, some times you stumble upon a watch or some coins that have fallen and become buried. How often does that really happen? How many buried, fallen pocket-items are there per square kilometer in the city, really? If you find one or two important items in a week, that’s impressive. Any more than that is as crazy as the man doing it. Maybe that was the point.

Anyway, suspending disbelief and just going with it, it was an entertaining movie. I was impressed with just how crazy Michael Douglas came across as.

After the movie, it was still nice out so we walked to the Superstore in the dark so we could chase the local bunnies and procure some chocolate cake.

“Breaking and entering makes everything taste… different. Makes it taste, um, livelier.”
