I didn’t watch the Canadian Leaders’ debate on Thursday but downloaded and watched it this morning. Interesting that the whole two hours seemed to be the party leaders all ganging up on Stephen Harper.
It really bugged me that Harper was such a calm robot through the whole debate. The other leaders were all worked up and into the discussion while Harper sat there like an arrogant, smug father telling them the way it is. He also must have said the phrase, “Let’s be clear” about 20-30 times.
I was pretty impressed with the Green party leader, Elizabeth May. Glad they let her in there. Very intelligent, very well researched. Not really a looker, but I don’t expect her to be leading my country and meeting dignitaries anyway.
It seemed like Elizabeth May would often start a good attack against Harper and then Jack Layton would back her up and dumb it down a little to make it more easily relevant and understandable.
Some of Gilles Duceppe’s word pronunciations were pretty entertaining. Also, whenever he talks he speaks of “Canada and Quebec” or “the provinces and Quebec.” For a separatist, you sure like to make sure we don’t forget about your home province, Mr. Duceppe.
About the only people that didn’t attack the Conservatives were attacking others for supporting the Conservatives.
Overall, I was pretty proud to have that be our leaders’ debate. Instead of people standing at podiums talking, it took place at a round-ish table and it really seemed more of a discussion. The moderator did a good job of keeping everyone on track but still letting them finish their thoughts (which I would think is important).
